Is magnesium glycinate a laxative?
Magnesium glycinate is not classed as a laxative, and it is the magnesium form least likely to loosen stool at supplement doses. The reason is mechanical. Magnesium is osmotically active: any amount not absorbed in the small intestine continues into the colon, where it holds water instead of letting it be reabsorbed. The laxative strength of a magnesium product is therefore a measure of how much of it your small intestine failed to take up.
Glycinate is magnesium chelated to two molecules of glycine, and that packaging is absorbed comparatively completely, so less reaches the colon. Its reputation for gentleness is not about being kinder to the gut lining; it is about arriving in smaller quantities where the effect happens. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements magnesium fact sheet sets the tolerable upper intake level for supplemental magnesium at 350 mg of elemental magnesium a day, and diarrhoea is the effect that limit is built around.

Is magnesium glycinate a stool softener?
No — magnesium glycinate is not a stool softener, and the categories are worth separating. A stool softener, properly an emollient, is typically docusate: it helps water and fat mix into the stool. An osmotic laxative holds water in the bowel, which is the magnesium mechanism. A bulk-former such as psyllium adds water-holding fibre to the stool; a stimulant such as senna speeds transit. The NIH NIDDK guidance on treating constipation keeps these apart because they suit different problems and fail in different ways.
Glycinate sits in none of those categories. It is a nutritional supplement chosen for absorption and tolerance. If softening stool is the goal, glycinate is the one magnesium form engineered not to do it.
Does magnesium glycinate change stool colour?
There is no established effect of magnesium glycinate on stool colour, and it does not appear among the recognised causes of a colour change. If the only thing you altered was starting magnesium glycinate, the magnesium is an unlikely explanation and it is worth looking further.
The common causes are better documented. Iron supplements and bismuth-containing medicines darken stool; deep green points to leafy vegetables, food colouring or fast transit; very pale stool can reflect a bile-flow problem. Black, tarry stool matters most, because as MedlinePlus explains in its entry on black or tarry stools, it can indicate bleeding in the upper digestive tract — a reason to contact a clinician promptly, not to stop a supplement and wait.
One caveat: a finished product is rarely one ingredient. If a multi-mineral changed your stool, the iron, colourings or fibre in it are more plausible candidates than the magnesium. Milk of magnesia versus magnesium glycinate
Milk of magnesia is magnesium hydroxide in suspension, sold as an over-the-counter laxative and antacid, and the bowel effect is the point of the product rather than a side effect. The doses are far above anything in a daily supplement, and magnesium hydroxide is poorly absorbed, so most of it stays in the gut and does what an osmotic agent does.
Magnesium glycinate is the opposite brief: absorb as much as possible, leave as little behind as possible. People sometimes switch from milk of magnesia to glycinate expecting a gentler version of the same result, then conclude the glycinate "did not work" — when it did exactly what it was designed to do.

Format matters far less than dose: most comparisons between magnesium citrate liquid and capsules are really comparisons between a very large dose and a small one. The bottled solution sold in pharmacies is a bowel-preparation product with many times the magnesium of a daily capsule.
At equal doses a dissolved form has a modest head start, because it does not have to disintegrate first. In a randomised, double-blind comparison of three preparations at 300 mg of elemental magnesium daily, magnesium citrate showed greater bioavailability than magnesium oxide over 60 days, with oxide performing no differently from placebo on urinary excretion. The cheap high-elemental form is the one leaving most magnesium behind in your gut.
Can you take magnesium citrate with psyllium husk?
You can, and the pairing is not known to be unsafe, but it is a poor experiment. Psyllium holds water within the stool and needs generous fluid; magnesium citrate holds water in the bowel around it. Run both at once and you have two water-management mechanisms working together, with no way to attribute the result.
If regularity is the goal, the fibre side has the better evidence. A meta-analysis of sixteen randomised trials in chronic constipation found that fibre supplementation improved stool frequency and consistency, with psyllium among the fibres showing significant effects — but only above roughly 10 g a day, over at least four weeks, and with more flatulence than control. Those qualifiers are why people conclude fibre "does not work".
Introduce one agent at a time, give it four weeks, and separate psyllium from medication and minerals by a couple of hours. What the evidence shows, and what it does not
The randomised evidence on magnesium and bowel habit is real but narrow, and it does not cover the form most people ask about. A meta-analysis of eight randomised trials in adults with chronic constipation found that magnesium oxide improved both stool frequency and stool consistency: 68 per cent responded to magnesium oxide against 19 per cent on control, with roughly 3.7 more bowel movements a week. Those results rest on two magnesium oxide trials within that review, so the evidence base is thin rather than absent.
What the evidence does not show matters as much. There are no comparable randomised trials of magnesium glycinate for constipation, and the mechanism predicts it largely would not help. There is no evidence linking glycinate to a change in stool colour. And magnesium is not a weight-loss ingredient in any form: it appears in metabolic formulas as a cofactor in normal energy metabolism, which is biochemistry, not a claim that it burns fat. Common mistakes with magnesium and bowel habit
- Switching form but not dose. Glycinate is only around 14 per cent elemental magnesium, so moving from oxide at the same capsule count quietly cuts your intake.
- Expecting glycinate to do citrate's job. If you wanted the loosening effect, the form engineered to avoid it is the wrong purchase.
- Using an osmotic effect as a fibre substitute. Leaning on daily magnesium to cover low fibre or low fluid treats the symptom and leaves the cause untouched.
- Changing two things at once. Starting magnesium and psyllium in the same week guarantees you will not know which to keep.
- Ignoring the kidney caveat. Clearance depends on kidney function, and people with reduced function can accumulate magnesium.
